What is the origin of the Purple Heart?

Purple Heart Day on August 7th commemorates the day in 1782 when then Gen. George Washington, created the Badge of Military Merit, a predecessor to the Purple Heart. The Purple Heart Medal is awarded to those wounded or killed while serving in the United States Armed Force and is the nation’s oldest military award still given.
